Fans were dumbfounded when Taylor Swift’s music video for her latest single, “The Man,” dropped early Thursday morning. Instead of a flashy ensemble, Swift transformed into a dude (a pretty attractive one, I should say) and a totally unrecognizable one.
Directed by Swift herself, the video opens with the 30-year-old dressed as a stuffy businessman in suit-and-tie, yelling at his employees while overlooking a view of the New York City skyline. He dumps cigarette ashes into a woman’s purse, parties like a rock star while aboard a yacht (a la Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in The Wolf of Wall Street), and urinates in a public subway station.
By the end of the four-minute video, Swift clues fans into the prosthetic step-by-step process to become “the man,” along with a surprise appearance from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson—well, his voice, that is. (We won’t spoil it any further.) She later breaks the fourth wall, making it clear that this is all hers and ”directed by, written by, owned by, and starring” the singer.
In the track, Swift, quite appropriately, writes about calling out the differences between men and women in society. The lyrics are suggestive and she even calls out Leo’s party-boy behavior in Saint-Tropez.
Whether it was throwing tantrums while on the tennis court or playing the picture-perfect dad, Swift makes sure that every type of “man” made his own appearance. Is she saying that all men act this way? No. But it’s interesting to watch her try to figure that out.
