Warning: This post contains spoilers for the first episode of HBO’s Euphoria.
• HBO’s new treen drama
• Reid has appeared in a number of other notable project over the last couple of years.
If you’ve started watching Euphoria, HBO’s provocative new teen drama, then you’ve already met Gia Bennett, sister of the lead character Rue (played by Zendaya). In the first episode, we learn that Gia has had a tough time dealing with her sister’s drug abuse; in one flashback, we see her walking into Rue’s bedroom to find her unconscious on the floor.
There’s a lot to like about Euphoria, but one of the strongest elements is the casting. While some of the young performers are relative newcomers, you might have recognized the actress who plays Rue’s sister, Gia.
Why does the sister on Euphoria look so familiar?
The actress playing Gia is Storm Reid, 15, whose been steadily working since she was only 10 years old, in 2013. If she looks familiar, it’s because she miiiiight be in something else you’ve seen recently.
Playing Gia on Euphoria is not the first high-profile role that Reid’s had this year. She recently appeared in Netflix’s When They See Us, the true-to-life series about the Central Park Five that was created, co-written, and directed by Ava DuVernay. Reid appeared in all four parts of that miniseries as Lisa, the girlfriend of Korey Wise, one of those accused and later exonerated in the case.
With Euphoria and When They See Us among her recent output, it might seem like Reid is veering exclusively toward more mature dramatic content, but that’s actually not where her biggest break yet came from. In fact, her When They See Us role was actually her second time working with Ava DuVernay, as she nabbed the lead role in the acclaimed director’s 2018 adaption of the classic YA novel A Wrinkle In Time.
As Meg, Reid appeared alongside some major, major talent. Her co-stars in the movie included Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah. Yes, Oprah.
Not only is Storm Reid perfectly cast in Euphoria, but she’s also super qualified. Most actors would kill for the chance to work alongside the Reeses, the Chris Pines, and Avas of the world, and Reid—at just 15 years old—has already been able to check those feats off on her list. Now, she’ll have to hold out hope that Euphoria will be another strong project to add to her impressive portfolio.
